Meet the Presenters
You’ll rub shoulders with some of the world’s best-selling authors and publishing industry professionals and practitioners. Here’s a list of presenters who will be speaking at Australia’s Rainforest Writing Retreat 2018.
*While we’ve never had a cancellation yet, sometimes events arise in Presenters’ lives and RWR can not offer a guarantee for any particular appearance. What we can do is always find an amazing presenter to fill in, if the need should ever arise.
Kylie Chan, international best-selling fantasy author, joins the RWR team for 2018! Kylie has spent many years immersed in traditional Chinese culture, having resided for ten years in Hong Kong. Her experiences and gained knowledge have inspired the mythology and themes of her books. When she returned to Australia she studied martial arts, Buddhist and Taoist philosophy, and brought these together in her Chinese mythology-based fantasy series, the Dark Heavens series and the Black Jade series. If you’ve ever dreamed of writing a hit fantasy series, you won’t want to miss this masterclass.
Brian Falkner, born and raised in Auckland, now resides in sunny Queensland. He is the author of several action-packed adventures for children and teenagers including, The Flea Thing, (shortlisted for the LIANZA Esther Glen Medal); The Real Thing; The Super Freak (shortlisted in the NZ Post Awards 2006); and The Tomorrow Code(shortlisted, NZ Post Awards and the Esther Glen Medal, 2009). Brainjack won the Sir Julius Vogel Science Fiction Award (Young Adult).
Prior to becoming a children’s author, Brian trained as a journalist and then worked as a reporter and an advertising copywriter, a radio announcer and an internet developer. His hobbies include scuba-diving, travel, amateur theatre, photography and rugby.
Brian returns as one of RWR guests’ favourite presenters, offering a dynamic masterclass, infusing his audience with a passion for writing fiction, confidence in their creativity and a good dose of humour.
Queenie Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1980, and migrated to Australia when she was six years old. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems and, in 2004, began drawing a 3-volume mystery-horror series called “The Dreaming” for LA-based manga publisher TOKYOPOP. To date, it has been translated into multiple languages. (Our RWR Crew Member, Emily, has been a long time fan of this series!)
She has since collaborated on several single-volume graphic novels with best-selling author Dean Koontz, as prequels to his “Odd Thomas” series of novels. After that, she worked on Small Shen, the prequel to Kylie Chan’s “White Tiger” Chinese fantasy series, followed by Fabled Kingdom, a 3-book fairy-tale inspired fantasy adventure done in a mix of prose and comics.
RWR is excited to welcome Queenie to our 2018 retreat as an RWR Presenter.
